YWCA HARBOUR HOUSE WOMEN’S EMERGENCY SHELTER

The YWCA of Lethbridge and District has been in existence since 1949 initially providing residence to young women who were students and travellers. Since that time the YWCA has diversified its programming to meet the growing needs of the Lethbridge community. In 1983 Harbour House Women’s Emergency Shelter was formally made a program of the YWCA. YWCA Harbour House provided services to victims of domestic violence and their children. These services included shelter, clothing, food and counselling.

Today the YWCA Harbour House offers a variety of services and programs that deal with the effects of family violence. These include:

  • Shelter and all of life’s necessities ( food, clothing, etc.)
  • Counselling
  • 24 hour crisis lines
  • Project Child Recovery - support groups for children who have witnessed violence
  • Group counselling
  • Psycho educational groups for the community
  • School program on site (Partnership with School District 51)
  • Outreach
Although 80% of our funding is provided through Sun Country Child and Family Services Authority and 5% from the United Way of Southwestern Alberta, much more is required to meet the growing needs of our clients and the community we serve.

In the past contract year the YWCA Harbour House Women’s Emergency Shelter came in contact with a total of 1438 women and children.

Shelter:324 women 311 children
Project Child Recovery:56 children
Drop Ins:88 women
Outreach:327 women 332 children
Crisis Calls:1446
Information and Support Calls:13,151

It is only through the generous support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and in particular Royal LePage South Country Real Estate Services that we are able to offer the variety of continued services to the public. Royal LePage has made a continued pledge of support to Outreach services through the YWCA Harbour House Women’s Emergency Shelter. This contribution is used to provide staffing to support women and children who have or are currently experiencing family violence and are in the community. These women may have been part of the shelter program however, more times than not, these women and children are still trying to cope with their life situation and are seeking support. With proper support and counselling they too may find a life of peace - and may be able to raise their children without the constant fear of violence.
